Welcome! After my corporate job was eliminated last year, I transitioned into the full time freelance world.

Living with less provided the freedom to focus on other passions and I've been freelance writing for environmentally conscious brands and busy entrepreneurs since.

It’s hereeeeeeee! My new website has been in the works for months, and I can finally breathe (for a few minutes anyway)! I’d been blogging with the same outdated WordPress platform and theme since 2015 with zero updates, investments, or direction.

I wish I had a ‘before’ screenshot for comparison, but it didn’t even cross my mind. This website is actually a template designed by Elizabeth McCravy and I ADORE it!

The Past

What started as a food blog idea years ago eventually transitioned into an online journal devoted to living minimally. I LOVE watching others cook, reading foodie mags, trying new cuisines, and even helping others eat healthfully (I’m a Registered Dietitian by trade), but actually loathe the process of cooking, cleaning, and then photographing it too?!

Evidence from my early food blogging days. Thank God for pivots!

Once I leaned into my passions – writing, saving money, the art of simplicity, experiences > things, and sustainability – opportunities began to unfold.

Flash back to my 10 year old self poking out short stories on my typewriter. I never imagined anyone would actually PAY me to write. But before that, I’d written countless free material- newspaper articles, guest posts, corporate blogs, and organization newsletters.

If you’ve experienced ‘runner’s high’- the euphoric feeling after pounding miles and miles of pavement- you can grasp the concept of ‘writer’s high.’ Clicking publish or submitting a piece you’ve poured everything into!? Yep- it’s the same.

The Present

After a few lucky breaks and chance encounters, I stumbling my way into the full time freelance writing world in 2018. If you want to know all the intimate details of losing my corporate job last year you can start here:

The Space Between- Part I

The Space Between- Part II

I’m still navigating my way through this new freelance writer and content creator identity, and find myself wincing when asked “So, what do you do?”

Am I a Freelance writer? Ghost Writer? Copywriter? Editor? Registered Dietitian? I think there’s space for all of the above!

According to a recent NPR poll, one in five US jobs is held by a contractor- including freelancers, on-call workers, and temp agency workers. The article goes on to say ‘…Within a decade, contractors and freelancers could make up half of the American workforce.’

Whether it’s by choice or force (or a combination like myself)- today’s workplace culture is shifting. Gone are the days of 35 year careers with the same employer, pension plans, and full time health care and 401K benefits.

If there’s anything to take away from my story and so many other freelancers out there- it’s to develop a passion into a skill that can be monetized. In the uncertain economy (in the midst of a government shutdown no less), you never know when you’ll be forced to take out a loan just to survive a week without pay.

The Future

My hope for the website has two parts:

  1. Attract even more writing and content creation opportunities for environmentally conscious brands and busy entrepreneurs.
  2. Provide resources for creating a sustainable lifestyle, advocate for ‘living with less,’ and foster a space to help others step into their passion.

What’s next

With a new wave of content consumption in the form of video, podcasts, micro blogs, and social media, some say blogging and writing are fading away. I say otherwise.

As we see more and more research on the negative impacts of time spent online, the rise of social media sabbaticals, and a step away from fast and convenient- it’s a pivotal time for writers and creators.

We as bloggers, writers, and online creators are forced to maximize that tiny window of time for good first impressions in order to attract readers and maintain consumers. Quality content matters.

I’m excited to forge ahead into this next chapter of content creation and I hope you’ll follow along…..now for the exciting part!

If you’ve made it this far- you’re in luck!

To celebrate the launch of my new website- I’m hosting a giveaway!!! I’ve never done one of these with my own funds, but I’m all about celebrating wins and being generous with what I’ve been given.
